We do attend an official BSA summer camp each and every year. I think the interaction with staff and other troops is a healthy thing. It's good to get the boys involved with a quality Scout camp for their first year or two. Then we move them into our other programs.

We conduct our own home-grown long term trips each year as well, usually high adventure programs for more advanced Scouts. We can customize the trip to our needs, developing the program plan and other details becomes a troop project and learning experience, and it is far more economical than traditional BSA high adventure programs. We usually conduct 2-4 "big trips" each year in addition to traditional summer camp.

In regard to Lewis & Clark.

One of our programs in 2000 was canoeing a 150 mile section of Lewis & Clark's route. We did it in 2000 to beat the hordes canoeing it during the anniversary years. We had the river almost exclusively to ourselves.

We paddled from Fort Benton to Route 191 in Montana. We didn't use any Scout camps or BSA programs. We outfitted ourselves using our own canoes and equipment. We paddled the 150 miles in 5 days and topped off the trip with two days of hiking at Glacier National Park. Plus we visited the Badlands, Black Hills & Mt Rushmore, Little Bighorn Battlefield, etc. The total cost of the trip was $300. It was an incredible experience.

The possiblities are endless out there.
