Dear Friend: Thank you for purchasing the manual for the Religion in Life program. While originally designed for Unitarian Universalist youth in Scouting who are working to earn the Unitarian Universalist religious award, the program can be used by any youth (most likely ages 12 to 18) or any advisor looking for a guided program with which a youth can explore Unitarian Universalist religious values and identity. To make best use of this manual, you will need copies of The Unitarian Universalist Pocket Guide; 100 Questions that Non-Members Ask About Unitarian Universalism; and a selection of current UUA pamphlets. These can be ordered through the UUA Bookstore; call 1-800-215-9076 or use the order form enclosed. Many churches will have the books available locally as well. In addition, you may find the enclosed pamphlets useful. One illustrates our commitment to religious pluralism. It is called "When Others (or You) Say God." The other, "In Support of All People," illuminates one aspect of our first religious principle, "the inherent worth and dignity of every person." It provides suggestions for young people trying to live out that principles when confronting slurs aimed at someone because of their sexuality or supposed sexuality. There are excellent resources on countering racism which are also available from our Bookstore. We hope that you will find the Religion in Life program to be an exciting and fulfilling process. If you are a Scout or a Scout leader, you may have heard that the Boy Scouts for a time withdrew recognition of the Religion in Life award. The UUA has continued to make both the program and the award available. You may check the UUA web site http://www.uua.org/news/scouts/ for information about the history and current status of the discussion between the UUA and the BSA. With all good wishes, Yours sincerely, John A. Buehrens President |
