Recommendations For Personal Survival Kits

Two approaches to carrying your survival kit:

bulletScatter items throughout pockets:
bulletSmall bulk and weight in any location.
bulletLoss of one doesn't mean loss of all.
bulletLess tendency to "rob-the-kit".
bulletIn a single small container:
bulletEasier to check contents.
bulletEasier to insure presence of kit.
bulletPacked in plastic soap box, tobacco tin, etc.

Minimum essential items:

bulletHigh quality pocket knife with at least two cutting blades. 
bulletPocket compass. 
bulletMatch safe with matches:
bulletPlastic or metallic container 
bulletWaterproof kitchen-type matches
bulletWaterproof matches rolled in paraffin-soaked muslin in an easily opened container such as a small soap box or toothbrush case. 
bulletNeedles 
bulletAssorted fish hooks 
bulletSnare wire 
bulletNeedle nose pliers 
bulletSoap 
bulletSmall fire starter 
bulletPersonal medicines 
bulletBand-Aids 
bulletInsect repellent 
bulletChapstick

Good to have items:

bulletPen-gun and/or flares 
bulletColored cloth for signaling 
bulletPlastic water bottle 
bulletSaw wire 
bulletSafety pins 
bulletRazor 
bulletSmall steel mirror
