Instructor: How Easy is it to find your way with a map and compass? Navigator: It's as easy as "1, 2, 3" Instructor: "Prove It!" Cheat Sheet: 1) Navigator should place the edge of the baseplate from "A" to "B" ("A" is where you are, "B" is where you are going). Make sure that the "D.O.T (Direction of Travel) is pointed toward where you are going. Ignore the floating compass needle during step "1" and "2." 2) Without moving the baseplate, turn the compass housing around until "meridian lines" on the compass housing line up with the meridian lines on the map. Make sure that the "N" on the Compass Housing is pointed upwards, toward the North. 3) Pick the compass up and press it to your chest. Turn your entire body around until the north (red) end of the floating compass needle is nicely outlined by the "orienting arrow" on the bottom of the compass housing. Pick out a distant point (like a tree) in the direction of the "D.O.T." Make sure that a) You don't touch the compass housing. Instructor: What is your bearing? Navigator: (Reads the number at the base of the "D.O.T.") Instructor: What will you see along the way? (tell him he can look at the Map Symbols)
Instructor: Before you begin the second time, have the Navigator "orient" the map, using the compass needle to see where the red end points (north) and moving the map till the top of the map is pointing north too. Then find the map symbol for where you are, then one that is visible from where you are. Point to the symbol and ask him what it is (let him look at the Key if he needs to). Instructor: What does this map symbol mean? Navigator: (Tells you) Instructor: OK, where is that in real life? Navigator: (Looks up from the map and points to where it is)
