These totems, designed and made in one of Elementary Scout Leaders’
Training Courses at Dallas, Texas, show a great deal of originality, and offer
suggestions for a contest in your own Troop. Each is the symbol of one of the
eight Patrols represented in the course. From left to right the totem poles
represented the following Patrols: the Lions, the Cuckoos, the Crows, the Mules,
the Steers, the Cats, the Eagles, and the Wolves.
A prize was offered to the Patrol designing the most distinctive, original
and artistic totem. The Lions totem, first on the left, won the award. The
clever replica of the "King of Beasts" which surmounts the pole,
together with the red and yellow color scheme of the painted figures, assured
this project first favor.
The Steer totem with its long horns and three exponents of "Speak no
Evil; See no Evil; Hear no Evil" has true totem atmosphere. The Cat Patrol
has emblazoned its totem with none other than figures of Felix, the ironic but
resourceful feline of the silver screen.
