When faced with a near-drowning victim, first-aid personnel should follow cardiac life support (CPR) procedures, focusing on keeping the airway open and stabilizing the neck in case of cervical spine or head injury. The goal of treatment is to restore breathing as rapidly as possible. Procedures at the accident site: The victim should be rescued as quickly and as safely as possible, with use of any available flotation aid. Rescue breathing should begin while the victim is still in the water. Basic life support procedures do not call for clearing the airway of aspirated water or performing the Heimlich maneuver or abdominal thrusts (unless the airway is obstructed). In all unconscious patients and those known to have been diving, the head should be supported in a neutral position. Patients should be kept horizontal to optimize brain perfusion, and oxygen should be administered as soon as possible. |
